Skallingen - spotguide

Skallingen can best be described as the cheeky sister of Blåvand. All though located only 10 km down the beach of Blåvand it offer conditions somewhat different. The nature down there is rougher and the conditions a little tougher. The walk to the beach is longer and rigging more uncomfortabel, but its a beautiful remote area not far from the tourist hordes of Blåvand.
During the second world war  the area was infested  with landmines to stop a possibelinvasion. During the last couple of years the goverment has made a big effort to try an clear the area of any left mines, ironically enough they hired a german company to do the job!!

The conditions are similar to Blåvand but the waves always a little bigger and not so depend on the rigth tide. Theres usally a pretty strong current going downwind. When the wind turns sligthly NorthWest,  meaning gusty offshore wind in Blåvand, Skallingen will offer you sideshore conditions (startboard tack).

The area also offers potential danger ( besides the already mentioned landmines that is), more than once a year the road gets floaded, leaving you stranded at a remote beach...
I actually tried that a couple of years ago, wich meant I had to walk the 10 km along the beach to Blåvand  and finding a place to sleep for the nigth. Then  back again the next morning at low tide  to pick up the car.
The possibility of getting stuck has put a sligth damper on my willingness to go to Skallingen allthough I love it when the conditions are on...

Off the top

A nice cold day.
